Production notes

Artists comment: This print relates to an earlier series of prints, particularly to 'Rain, Bateau Bay', 1975. In this earlier print the graphic elements were emphasized, the headlands tied to the curved sea hoqizon, which was obscured by the advancing rain. The present print was based on a small colour sketch, done from memory, of a particular afdternoon light at Bateau Bay, the distant seas bright from sunlight, which also hit the headland, the near seas darker undercloud shadow. Eighteen successive colours were used, and all stencils prepared with water soluble gum, with no photo stencils. The graded sky was printed first, then the sea, with the nearest elements printed last (like a stage set of successive ink layers), using the capacity of a screenprint to range from the transparent washes of sky and seas, to the opaque ink on the headland.
