Sir George Grey KCB (1812 -98)
Sir George Grey, was born in Portugal and educated in England. His interest in migration was as a cure for the social ills of England and he explored extensively in Western Australia for settlement sights. He was Governor of South Australia (1840-45), Governor of New Zealand (1845-53), Cape Colony (1854-61) and New Zealand again (1861-8). He later served in the New Zealand Government for some 20 Years. He died in England. Grey was a keen naturalist, collecting for English institutions, he also collected books presenting libraries Cape Town and Auckland. His gift to the Auckland Public Library numbered over 8,000 volumes, a catalogue of which was published in 1888.
