Subject description
In 1972 Tate Adams conceived a grand plan for his Crossley Editions to publish a set of large prints. It would include examples of all the Australian printmakers he represented, as well as some Japanese printmakers.
The '40/40' refereed to in the title is derived from the size of a standard zinc etching plate, 40 x 20 inches. Two such plates side by side (hence 40 x 40 inches, 101.6 x 101.6 cm) could be printed on George Baldessin's press.
Only three of the projected 25 (or more) works were produced - 'On the heels of the poltergeist' by Jock Clutterbuck; 'Relativity' by Roger Kemp and 'Personage & Emblems' by George Baldessin.
