Subject description

The Church of Sta Maria della Salute and the white wall of the Dogana [Customs House] are seen on the further side of the Grand Canal. Near the foreground are three gondolas, and in front on the left a flight of stairs in shadow, where a figure, crouching behind a twisted pillar, watches the pair of dancers, near where a woman leans back, holding a fan.
