DEATH OF MR. J. B. AUSTIN.Old colonists generally, and a wide circle of friends, will receive with deep regret the announcement made this morning of the death of Mr. J.B. Austin, which occurred at his residence, Third-street, Knightsbridge, on Friday. Mr. John Baptist Austin, who was in his 69th year, was the son of the Rev. John Baptist Austin, with whom he arrived in the colony from England in December, 1843, in the barque Augustus, commanded by the late Hon. John Hart.
In his younger days Mr. Austin was engaged with the firm of Messrs. Elder, Smith, & Co. being a brother-in-law of the late Mr. A. L. Elder. He afterwards became connected with the press, and was on the reporting staff of The Advertiser when it was established. He was afterwards secretary of the Wallaroo Railway Company, and in 1870 he and Mr. W. Moffat became proprietors of the Gawler Times, with which he was connected for about twelve months.
Mr. Austin wrote a book on South Australian vineyards, and another on the mines of the colony. He also contributed to the late Mr. Harcus's "History of South Australia an interesting chapter on the mines and minerals of the colony. Latterly Mr. Austin has been acting as a broker. His health broke down recently, and his death was not altogether unexpected. The funeral will take place at the Mitcham Cemetery on Sunday afternoon.
