COLOUR PRINTS

Lino cuts by Ethleen Palmer form a show at the Victorian Artists Society Galleries, 430 Albert street, East Melbourne, opening to-day and closing on November 26. It is hard to select one print better than another: all are splendidly done.

There is a definite Japanese influence throughout her work. It is a pleasant trait. The Japanese printers are not doing it now. European art has caught them in a mesh of modernism, and that's that! Her traditions are so well founded however that she need not worry about her artistic future. "Ducks and Cartwheels" "Koalas" and "Egrets" are sufficient to stamp her as a wood engraver of note.

Apart from design which is thoroughly necessary in her work, there is a feeling for fine colour and a manner of correct drawing which is something of which she can be proud. "Farrell's Shed" is a colour nocturne. The show is good.
