ENGRAVING – We have been favoured with specimens of engraving from the establishment of Messrs. Tulloch and Brown, which are fully justified in stating anything of the kind we have yet seen in Australia. Mr. Tulloch’s abilities are well known already, by various sketches which he made for the Messrs. Ham; but his partner is not yet known in Melbourne, as he only arrived a few weeks ago. Mr Brown was for many years engaged on the Ordinance Survey of Great Britain, and every person who has seen the splendid maps produced at the establishment will testify to the perfection with which the engraving was executed. We have now before us one of those maps, part of which is Mr Brown’s workmanship, and we can only say that we never conceived that such minuteness of detail, accuracy and execution, beauty of workmanship, and pictorial effect, could possibly be exhibited in a map. We consider the arrival of an engraver amongst us, whose abilities are so striking as those of Mr Brown, is a great gift to the community, and we hope that gentleman will find in Victoria ample encouragement for the exercise of his talents.
