Sydney Illustrated. - We have received the second number of Mr. Prout’s series of lithographic views of Sydney and its vicinity. Mr. Prout, in a note to subscribers, apologises for the quality of the paper on which the impressions are taken, not being such as he could wish, and regretting his inability at present to procure better in the colony. It is certainly to be regretted that any adventitious circumstance of this nature should interfere to mar the effect which the talents of Mr. Prout, as exerted in this work, are so calculated to produce. The sketches in the present number exhibit taste and conception of the highest order, and combined with bold and vigorous execution, which has transferred a very striking effect in the scene represented to the “pencilled page” betrays the touch of finished genius. The views, four in number, are, Sydney Cove, taken from the hill at Dawe’s Battery; the lower fall of Willoughby, North Shore; Sydney, from Mrs. Darling’s Point; and the New Government House. The descriptive letter press by Mr. Rae, is a faithful in its explanation of the scene illustrated, as it is eloquent and graceful in its style, and forms not the least attractive part of a work which reflects equal credit on the artist and the author, and which, whilst its publication amongst us must tend to diffuse the love of those arts which soften and refine the mind, will say much in its dissemination in England for the tastes and pursuits which are cherished in our community.
