Brian Seidel

Born in Adelaide in 1928, Brian Seidel studied at the South Australian School of Art from 1948 to 1953; at the University of Iowa, USA in 1961 (studying graphics under Mauricio Lasansky); and at the Slade School, London from 1961 to 1963 (studying lithography).

He returned to Adelaide in 1963 where he taught printmaking at the South Australian School of Art from 1964 to 1966. During this time, he was art critic for Adelaide News from 1963 to 1966. From 1968 to 1970 he was Head of the Art Department at the Bedford Park Teachers College, South Australia. From 1971 to 1981 he was Head of the School of Art and Design, Preston Institute of Technology, Victoria; council member of the Victorian Council of the Arts 1976; and a board member of the Victorian Print Workshop from c. 1980 to 1983.

From 1964 to 1992, Seidel held around 25 solo exhibitions. His work has also been included in a number of print and drawing prize exhibitions both in Australia and internationally (including Figures and Faces Drawn from Life, Heide, 1983; and Prints of Australia: Pre-Settlement to Present, National Gallery of Australia, 1989). Printmaking and its development within Australia has been of continual interest for Seidel: he wrote Printmaking for the Arts in Australia series in 1966 and in 1993 became co-owner, with Jeffrey Makin, of the printmaking firm, Port Jackson Press.
