FINE ARTS IN AUSTRALIA
The collection of Mr Earl, the artist, reflects the greatest credit upon that gentleman. His portraits, of which we are happy to hear he has made a great many, are excellent likenesses. His Sir Thomas Brisbane, (now completed) a full length portrait, we are much pleased with. Sir Thomas is portrayed in his civil uniform, as Governor, the likeness is happy, and the picture, in toto of a bright, respectable character. It was agitated, that the portrait should be painted in London, but we are happy to find Mr Earl has had what we considert his right. It an inferior artist in England had had the job, it would have cost about 200l. Mr Earl, in Sydney, (where every thing else is paid with 2001 per cent) receives 50l. We are of opinion, that Mr Earl is not paid – we should be glad to see the arts thrive in New South Wales, and that this gentleman received at least a hundred guineas.
