It will be seen, on reference to another column, that Mr. EARLE’S Panorama of Sydney is exhibiting in London, and that the assistance of Colonel DUMARESQ’S local knowledge has been of considerable advantage to Mr Burford, who has enlarged on Mr. EARLE’S drawings. A faithful representation of our infant capital, there is no doubt, will be of material service in affording something like reasonable ideas of the actual state of the Colony in England, where, unfortunately, it is considered, even by some of the most enlightened amongst the people, as little better than a vast prison for the very outcasts of society. The Colonists must, for a while, bear patiently the sneers of such individuals as Master Blackwood, and others, ejusdem generis, who look upon our embryo empire as a sort of “moral Cloacina”. It is narrowness of mind alone that would gravely put forth such injurious insinuations, and ignorance of history which could overlook the origin of some of the most powerful nations – Rome and Venice, for instance, in ancient story, and America in modern times.
