Gloria Petyarre
Born about 1938, Gloria Petyarre is a prominent Anmatyerre artist who has been at the forefront of contemporary Australian painting for many years. She lives and works in her own community at Utopia, combining this with visits to major cities for exhibitions and to paint.
A close associate of the major artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Petyarre has exhibited widely. From 1977 to 1987 she participated in numerous group exhibitions with other women from Utopia. In 1989 her paintings were included in the Art From Utopia exhibition at the Austral Gallery, St Louis, and in 1993, together with her husband Ronni Price, she designed and executed a mural for the Kansas City Zoo, USA.
While she works within the bounds of traditional knowledge and often expresses Tjukurrpa themes and traditonal women’s body designs, Petyarre remains a contemporary and individualist artist exhibiting a number of clear stylistic innovations, both sequential and concurrent. At the same time, the forms or structures that can be discerned underlying much of her work are reminiscent of the forms of other kin, in particular Emily Kame Kngwarreye and her sister Ada Bird.
