Timothy Akis

Timothy Akis was born in 1940 in Tsembaga Village, Simbai Vallery, Madang Province. He started drawing, whilst working as an interpreter during the 1960s, as a means of communicating complex ideas to visiting anthropologists. After visiting Port Moresby he focused more on drawing and experimenting with drawing techniques. Limited edition screenprints of his work were also made. Akis’ non-traditional style was not restricted by the artistic conventions of his people, nor was inhibited by Western education. He died in 1984.
