Maryanne Mungatopi
Maryanne Mungatopi was born on Melville Island in 1966 and is a senior artist with the Jilamara Arts and Crafts Association on Melville Island. Mungatopi is particularly noted for her ironwood carvings and paintings using natural pigments on paper, canvas and bark. She has been making prints since 1995 and has worked at the Australian Print Workshop, Melbourne. Mungatopi currently lives in Milikapiti, Melville Island.
Her art is also closely linked to stories of Purrukuparli, the Tiwi mythological ancestor and is characterised by a geometric structure of lines and dots, with every line and marking having an important meaning. These geometric patterns, common to most Tiwi art, often depict sites of stories of mythological significance involving ancestors who were changed into animals or birds. Each Tiwi artist has their own individual interpretation of the designs.
Since 1995 she has shown her work in group exhibitions in Australia, Europe and the USA.
