Carts at St Helena.

I was on one day’s leave from the air force and went to the church at St Helena —known as Rose Chapel — to paint a wedding anniversary picture of the tiny chapel to present later to my wife, Doris. Near the end of the day I realized she would ask what I had done for the day. Because it was not yet time to hand over the picture, I turned my easel to the left and painted another picture on a new canvas of some carts beyond the fence, but close. It seemed a good design for a print some months later. The first notion of translucency occurred to me at that time.
