James Cant

James Montgomery Cant was born in Melbourne, Victoria, 28 November 1911. He studied at the East Sydney Technical School and the Julian Ashton before leaving for England to study at the Central School of Arts and Craft, London in 1935 and 1936. He then travelled in Europe before returning to Australia in 1939. Cant visited England again in 1949. On his return he settled in Adelaide where he taught part-time at the South Australian School of Art. His first monotypes were made in the late 1940s and he intermittently used the technique in later years. He also produced a few screenprints.
