ABRAHAMS, Louis

Born in London in 1852, Louis Abrahams arrived in Australia in 1860. He studied at the Melbourne National Gallery School in 1875 and formed a life-long friendship with Frederick McCubbin. His earliest etchings date from this period. With McCubbin and Tom Roberts he painted at the first artists’ camp at Box Hill. His family kept open house for this group from 1886-1889, however Abrahams yielded to his father’s wishes to join the family business rather than to pursue an artistic career. Between 1890-1900 he became wealthier but his health declined and in 1903 he committed suicide.
