John Stringer

Born in Melbourne in 1938, John Stringer studied at Caulfield Technical College and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. From 1958 to 1960 he was an assistant in the print department at the National Gallery of Victoria where he subsequently worked as Exhibitions Officer. In 1970 he moved to New York where he was Assistant Director, International Programme, at the Museum of Modern Art.

Although he occasionally produced and exhibited watercolours, Stringer is primarily a printmaker, exhibiting since 1959. He has produces both relief (masonite cuts and linocuts) and intaglio prints (etchings, engravings and drypoint on both metal and perspex). In 1962, he was included in the print section of an Australian exhibition in South East Asia. In 1963-64 his prints were included in the Survey exhibition touring State galleries.

He now works as a private curator.
