Earle Backen
Earle Backen was born in Albury, NSW, in September 1927. He studied at the Julian Ashton School, Sydney under John Passmore and in 1954 was awarded the New South Wales Travelling Art Scholarship. He travelled to England and studied in London at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and the Slade School.
He was in Paris in 956 and 1957 and in 1959 studied engraving at S.W. Hayter’s Atelier 17. He returned to Sydney late in 1959, and taught at the National Art School, Sydney Alexander Mackie College NSW where he established the printmaking workshop. In recent years he has become well known as a painter.
