Abstract

The first historical article on the history of etching in Australia in the late 19th century. Sydney artists mentioned are Conrad Martens, Christopher J. Coveny, Livingston Hopkins, Julian Ashton, Tom Roberts, B.E. Minns, Fullwood, Hall Thorpe, Alfred Coffey and Arthur Streeton. Hopkins was the instigator and printed for artists. Later artists were Eirene Mort, Sydney Ure Smith and Bruce Robertson. In Victoria James Oldham in Ballarat, and Melbourne artists John Mather, Victor Cobb, John Shirlow, Ernest Moffitt and Lionel Lindsay are named.
