Mathias Kauage

Mathias Kauage began drawing after seeing an exhibition of Timothy Akis’ work. Subsequently, he was taught the art of wood block printing by Georgina Bier, one of Akis' teachers. He also learnt the techniques of copper beating. Kauage uses traditional design techniques incorporated with religious, imagined and modern subjects. He is the most successful and well known of the contemporary Papua New Guinea artists and in 1998 was awarded the OBE for his services to art.
