The owl.

This is one of Griffin’s most compelling later prints. Depicting a masked owl, numerous rich but thin layers of ink have been superimposed to create a glowing depth of colour in the torso, similar to that created by glazes of oil paint. The intensive working of the tree’s bark reflects a 1960s interest in texture, which is set against the restricted linear background. The popularity of this work can be seen by the fact that it was purchased by four public galleries between 1966 and 1972.
