Ellen Jose

Ellen Jose was born in Cairns, North Queensland in 1951, of Torres Strait Islander decent. After leaving school she worked as a commercial artist and in 1976 was awarded a Certificate of Applied Art from Seven Hills Art College, Brisbane. Jose continued her studies in Melbourne, gaining a Diploma of Fine art from Preston Institute of Technology in 1978 and a Diploma of Education from Melbourne State College in 1979. She has worked with the Victorian Aboriginal Service and the Education Department. Since 1982 Jose has travelled and exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. As well as producing paintings, prints and installations, she studies classical music.
