Production notes
Kantilla's first attempts at lithography used washes of tushe that resulted in an effect not unlike the painted quality of thin ochres on canvas. It seemed a medium suited to Kitty's customary way of working. I watched as Kitty began drawing onto the aluminium plate, each mark applied with deliberation. The image evolved in stages, areas of dots wandering into sections of short lines and dashes, punctuated by meandering lines and intersected by irregular tracts of filled in squares. Like her first etchings, this print reveals a kind of 'learning on the job', an intuitive leap into the process. What these prints show is the direct response of Kitty's hand and thought, her drawing, scratching and painting onto the plate, spontaneous yet deliberate gestures guided by her innate sense of design. Her prints reveal an essential cryptic beauty in her imagery as well as a reverance for tradition that is embedded in all her work. Martin King, edited excerpt from King's essay 'Kitty's Prints' in Judith Ryan, Kitty Kantilla, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, 2008, pp.98-99.
