Label verso, 'Spencer Scott Sandilands'. Inscribed verso of frame [backing board] in blue ink, 'All the below facts are from Mr Robert Douglas of Esperance, the son of Captain Douglas/ Saw Mr Robert Douglas June 1972 regarding the picture and he gave the (203/1) whole of the following information: He identified the ships as the 'GRACE DARLING', the 'FLINDERS'/ and a coal hulk./ The 'Grace Darling', his father Captain Douglas's ship, is shown with one top-sail too many, and the mast too high./ The 'Flinders' traded from Adelaide to Esperance with different stores. (Others were the 'Frankland', which sank on a reef while on her moorings at Point Malcom./ The coal hulk ended up wrecked on Bandy Creek. People took timber from the old hulk for their gardens. Oregon pine. They made it into paths./ The painting was painting between 1894 and 1898./ The jetty is the main town jetty and is near the Pier Hotel. It was about the length it is now (1972). It was extended in 1898./ The painting dates to prior to 1898,/ before the jetty was extended./ Mr R. Douglas came to live in Esperance in 1894./ Captain Douglas first had the 'Agnes', which was wrecked in Bremer Bay in 1892. Then he went to Adelaide and bought the 'Grace Darling'./ Eric Stone in Borden has the figure-head of the 'Grace Darling'.
