Subject description
Burning Mountain, situated in the Upper Hunter region of New South Wales, 300 km north of Sydney, is named after the sulphurous smoke which comes from fissures in the rocks. It was well known by the local Wanaruah people who named it Wingen ('fire'), hence the name of the small European settlement that was established in the 1840s.
