Production notes
Eileen Mayo made her first colour linocut ‘Turkish bath’ after been encouraged by Claude Flight to exhibit at the 'Second Exhibition of British Linocuts' held at Redfern Gallery in London in 1930. It is said that Flight instructed Mayo in linocutting over the telephone after she showed interest in learning the technique while modelling for the Grosvenor School of Modern Art life drawing classes. ‘Turkish bath’ follows Flight’s technique of dispensing with a key block to create a design in colour. The print demonstrates Mayo’s instinctive ability to emphasise underlying patterns in her subject matter. ‘The Observer’ called it the "most satisfactory print in the show”.
