Production notes
The work is frequently found hand-coloured. Sometimes this appears contemporanius, but more often it is modern.
Subject description
Cruikshank sets his caricature at a dock at Dover. On the left is a sailing ship at anchor in the English Channel, from which African woman passengers are being rowed to shore. Some have already ascended the stairs and are making come-hither gestures to a group of sailors and top-hatted dandies on the right - some of the men look bemused and others unpleased. Between the two groups is the smug, cigar smoking dealer, who has organised the transaction.
