Abstract

Portraits commemorate, transform, reflect, iconise and sometimes distort their subject in endlessly fascinating variety. In an exciting new initiative for 2016, AGWA introduces Portrait Month where we explore the many forms of portraiture across photography, painting, video and sculpture. Taking centre focus is the State’s premier portraiture prize, the 2016 Black Swan Prize for Portraiture which features alongside AGWA’s own Portrait Project. Celebrating its tenth Anniversary, the Black Swan Prize is presented for the first time at the State Art Gallery. Australia’s third richest art prize, the Black Swan Prize features the $50,000 Lester Group Prize, the $7,500 Amana Living People’s Choice Prize, the new $10,000 Tony Fini Foundation Artist Prize and two Highly Commended $500 HU Kendall & Co Gift Vouchers. WA’s only portrait prize attracts hundreds of entries nationally each year. Launching in Portrait Month is AGWA’s Portrait Project, where we invite you to take a look at the myriad of portraits in the State Art Collection. Take the Portrait Trail, join an AGWA Guru Guide on a free guided tour, or spend some time listening to Aggie the Robot as she wanders through the portraits on display. Enjoy our new series of online Video Insights, some of which feature Hannah Gadsby, who will also be presenting a comedy routine about portraits at ARTBAR on 27 October. Feeling inspired? Create your own self-portrait in the Imagination Room. [Gallery media].
