Abstract

In May 2016, the Gallery opened two new display spaces, Garden Gallery and Sky Gallery. These Micro Galleries launched with works from the Wesfarmers Collection beginning with the idea of large works in small spaces. The first 2017 display will focus on the concept of the Australian land and landscape. In the second part of the year, the Micro Galleries will explore the medium of photography with works from iconic Australian artists. The second installment of the Wesfarmers Collection display focuses on the idea of landscape and what contemporary explorations of the theme can show us about our place, tastes and traditions. Antipodean trees and intense light that among other elements have come to define the 'iconic Australian landscape' can be found in the paintings of Eugene von Guerard, Arthur Streeton and Frederick McCubbin, whose works are currently on view in our Centenary Galleries. Indeed, the European, and by extension, Australian, landscape tradition has been seeped in symbolism, metaphor and philosophy of the day. The works on display from the Wesfarmers Collection attest to the contemporary manifestations and exploration of this theme through a variety of media, scale and depth of focus. Artists featured are Pantjiti Mary McLean, Patrick Mung Mung, George Haynes, Howard Taylor, Brad Rimmer, Tony Clark and William Delafield Cook. [Gallery media, 2017].
