Abstract
‘Ilm is the Arabic word for ‘knowledge’ and the display reflects on the variety of ways through which historical and contemporary Muslim artists have explored understanding knowledge in Islam. The diverse selection of media, including paintings, textiles, ceramic and metalwork, created in the Middle East, India, Southeast Asia and Australia, testify to the significance of ‘ilm in religious belief. The spiritual knowledge contained within the holy book of the Qur’an has inspired Muslim calligraphers to create ornately decorated texts while figurative scenes from heroic epics depicted in miniature paintings and ceramic decoration convey knowledge of man and woman’s place in the unfolding drama of history.
