Abstract

Alexandra Standen is the Emerging Australian recipient of the 2012 Sidney Myer Fund Australian Ceramic Award. Alexandra is a Sydney and Mittagong-based artist. Her installation draws from Italo Calvino's 1965 short story The Distance of the Moon. Made up of porcelain and stoneware objects that appear to float across the gallery walls and floor, and accompanied by an experimental stop-frame animation, Standen's work explores the possibilities of composition and narrative. Using porcelain, stoneware, light and shadow, her installation creates visual poetics that evoke the passing of time and the need for escape. [Gallery publicity].
