Abstract

Adelaide-based potter Kirsten Coelho presents an installation of domestic interiors that memorialise the experience of 19th century migrants and settlers arriving in Australia. Through a series of porcelain reproductions of decaying, archetypal house-hold items of the period, the extraordinary dreams, ambitions, failings and violence of this period are quietly contained. With narrative imagery appropriated from colonial-era paintings, the installation reflects on how objects and art shape history and cultural memory. As part of the partnership with Culture Victoria, SAM was able to produce three documentaries on the 2012 Sidney Myer Fund ACA, including this one on Kirsten Coelho: http://vimeo.com/52136338 from Shepparton Art Museum on Vimeo.
