Abstract

Australian Sketchbook: Colonial life and the art of S.T. Gill at the State Library of Victoria is the first major retrospective of Australia’s most popular mid-19th century artist. It is a collaborative project of the State Library Victoria and the National Library of Australia, which draws on the substantial colonial collections of each institution to present the most comprehensive exhibition of S.T. Gill’s work ever staged. ST Gill produced some of the most memorable images of the Goldfields, capturing the quintessential Australian experience. As part of a series of satellite exhibitions held in Gill heartland areas of regional Victoria, the accompanying exhibition ST Gill: Life on the Goldfields at the Castlemaine Art Gallery and Historical Museum features works from the permanent collection.
