Documentation
Over the past 3 years, artist Clayton Tremlett has conducted extensive research into the fascinating imagery and mythology associated with Australian bushrangers of the 19th century. Included in this exhibition are these impressive objects, loaned from the Public Records Office of Victoria. These enormous books are the original Central Registers of Male Prisoners used in the Victorian gaol system. They include all the personal details and photographs of many of Victoria’s most infamous criminals, including bushrangers Isaiah ‘Wild’ Wright and Henry Power. The folklore associated with bushrangers has captured the imaginations of Australians since the 1790s, and is the inspiration behind the Beard and Influence project. Beard and Influence presents printmaker Clayton Tremlett’s contemporary approach to the compelling stories of some of Australia’s most notorious bushrangers explored through self-portraiture.
