Abstract

PEAR is an exhibition by Canberra artist Robbie Karmel. The work, which consists of etchings and drawings, appropriates and borrows from existing artworks to comment on the lack of cultural grounding for his generation of Anglo-Australians. By distorting and warping images from alien cultures to his own, such as Japanese woodblock artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, Karmel is commenting on the tendency to borrow indiscriminately from other cultures in search of something more culturally grounded. The original images and objects were chosen for their striking and often haunting nature and richly imbedded cultural status.[Megalo media].
