Abstract

An assured, flowing line and simplicity of form are features of Adrian Lockhart’s drawings, paintings and prints.  His figure drawings flow with a smooth, almost unbroken line that may reflect  the curve of a beach or the topography of hills.  In turn, beachscapes and interiors have a sensual quality, creating a subtle discourse between his works.  Adrian’s recent paintings have been created with great reverence to the basic elements of light, colour and shape.  They contain the kind of understanding of form and structure only available to the inveterate drawer, someone who has immersed himself in draughtsmanship before committing to paint.  His still life paintings express all that is full of life, from the endless cycle of a bowl’s lip to a ripe pomegrante.  It is essential to Adrian that his works portray more than static images, but convey a stillness and sense of quiet; a space in our daily lives where we can breath.  To quote Adrian; “Many of my works contain the same elements but it is how I paint them which provides the challenge of painting... from different shapes and colours and shadows I try to create an image of sensual simplicity.” [Gallery media, 2011]
