Abstract

An exhibition of recent work from Brisbane-based designer Paula Dunlop combining fashion and photography.

Often using vintage garments and re-working them, Dunlop's practice questions the impulses of 'originality' and 'newness' that supposedly define fashion. Each garment in the show was made for a specific recipient (friends, colleagues, family) whose portrait wearing the reworked piece allows the viewer a unique insight into the relationship between the maker and wearer.

Dunlop is concerned with the everyday lives of clothing and the hands on experience of making, while eschewing the role of conventional 'fashion designer'. Her work represents an alternative fashion practice in which the wearer's identity is considered throughout the process of making.

Paula Dunlop is currently completing her PhD at the Queensland University of Technology. [Gallery media, 2009]
