Abstract

Phillip McConnell (born 1947) is the son of master potter Carl McConnell (1926-2003).

This exhibition begins with a ceramic bottle produced when the artist was about 13 years of age.

Following his first exhibition at Gallery 1 Eleven in Brisbane in 1970, McConnell held exhibitions in the southern capitals before spending time honing his skills in Japan. Here he learnt new techniques from master potter Tatsuzo Shimaoka.

Japan's long ceramic tradition made an indelible mark on the young artist, and he was soon proficient in the various aspects of throwing, decorating and firing pots.

McConnell returned to Australia in 1974 and the following year set up his studio in Toowoomba, which he still maintains today. [Gallery media, 2006].
