Abstract

Darren Knight Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Melbourne artist Jon Campbell. Up Shit Creek continues Campbell’s interest in Australian vernacular with a series of small-scale, finely tuned enamel on board paintings. Hand-drawn fonts and glossy surfaces celebrate words and sayings from the artist’s neighbourhood (‘chicken parma and pot’) to Australian history (‘let the franklin flow’). The exhibition will also include three hand-stitched and screen-printed, double-sided banners; weak as piss, yeah/Mr.Football and it’s gonna take a lotta love.

The opening of Up Shit Creek will coincide with the Sydney launch of Campbell’s Setlist, featuring a collection of original and re-worked band set lists. Setlist is published by The Narrows, Melbourne and designed by Jon Campbell, Matt Hinkley and Warren Taylor. It is published in a signed and numbered edition of 600.

Jon Campbell’s recent solo projects include $23,000,000, Uplands Gallery, Melbourne (2008); and Yeah Yeah Yeah Billboard, Hobsons Bay City Council billboard, 350 - 380 Kororoit Creek Rd, Altona, Melbourne (2008).

Recent and upcoming group projects include Making it New: Focus on Contemporary Australian Art, (curated by Glenn Barkley), Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (2009); Shilo Project, Ian Potter Museum of Art, Melbourne (2009-2010); Darren Knight Gallery at Nicholson St, Brunswick, Melbourne (October 2009); From Walden to Vegas, La Foundation Nationale des Arts Graphiques et Plastiques, Paris, (2009);Terra Nullius - Contemporary Art from Australia, ACC Galerie Weimar, Germany (2009); Cock and Bull, VCA Margaret Lawrence Gallery (with Matt Griffin, Tony Garifilakis & Beagles/Ramsey), VCA, Melbourne (2009); and Darren Knight Gallery at Auckland Art Fair, Auckland (2009).

A double CD with friend and artist Matthew Griffin and their new outfit Olympic Doughnuts will be released in December 2009. [Gallery media, 2009].
