Abstract

The charged surfaces of Rod Moss’ paintings shift and slide between highly stylised evocations of art history and a careful, considered depiction of the life and people of Alice Springs.

As a non-indigenous artist dealing with representations of indigenous Australians, Moss seems to say to us: the artist can’t simply take a god’s eye view, where others are objectified as the puppets of forces always greater than themselves, but neither can they adopt an unreflected naturalism in which to dwell innocently in the immediacy of their world.
