Abstract

Our unconscious and every day action of looking is questioned in Rebecca Beardmore's haunting images of sightseers at tourist lookout sites like 'The Gap'.

Restrained within the framed edges of the polished flat metal surfaces, spectral figures float within the muted background panoramas of sky and scrub. A subtle overlay of text with a narrator's observation of the landscape is barely visible but underscores the captured moments and enhances and challenges our awareness of the ways in which we 'see'.
