Abstract

This exhibition, which draws on the Gallery's collection of works from the 1950s and 1960s, is concerned with two major themes.

The ancestors and the associated legends have always been important to Aboriginal artists, while the theme of spirits - whether benevolent or evil - seems to have been particular to the period around 1960.

Individual works, as well as groups, or series, of paintings, will be shown as representative of the rich cultural traditions of the Arnhem Land Region. [Gallery media, 1987].
