Abstract

The highlight of Bendigo Art Gallery’s exhibition program this year is the exhibition 'The Long Weekend', which will go on display in December. The exhibition has been curated by Bendigo Art Gallery and will be exclusively displayed in Bendigo.

'The Long Weekend' highlights the experiences of a selection of Australian artists in France between the First and Second World Wars. It brings to light their individual pursuits; their movements and lifestyle, alongside the art they created. We are taken a step closer to their motivation, their thirst for cultural engagement, why some chose to stay abroad and in some cases never to return to Australia. The exhibition focuses primarily on the Parisian experience, through the work of these Australian artists we are immersed in the culture of the period – the café lifestyle; the sense of style and fashion; the beauty and fascination of the French capital – its parks and gardens, historic buildings, and the river Seine.

The artists highlighted in the exhibition are: Will Ashton, Stella Bowen, Rupert Bunny, Robert Campbell, Ethel Carrick, Bessie Davidson, Madge Freeman, Bessie Gibson, Agnes Goodsir, Anne Alison Greene, Max Meldrum, Kate O'Connor and Hilda Rix Nicholas.
