Abstract
Ivor Hele : The Heroic Figure is an exhibition drawn from the large art collection held at the Memorial. Ivor Hele was Australia's longest-serving war artist, attaining the rank of Major, and serving in North Africa, New Guinea and Korea. Hele's style changed dramatically throughout his career, in North Africa he painted with a soft pink palette; his paintings from New Guinea became dark and sombre, conveying a sense of gloom and despair. Hele was unable to complete a series of paintings of soldiers in the Lae area due to ill health. Featuring dramatic oranges and greens, his paintings from Korea reflect concern and a heightened sense of physical fatigue. [AWM media, 1997].
