Abstract

4 photographic calendars, virtual reconstructions and 3D animation from Wiesbaden
In co-operation with Goethe Institut, Sydney and assisted by Lufthansa/Star Alliance.

4 Big Years is a selection of outstanding work produced by students of the University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule) in Wiesbaden, Germany. It is the result of creative collaboration with University staff and design companies in the areas of visual communication, interior and 3D animation design. The high standards of design and production make an impressive contribution to the sharing of ideas and products in design and cultural fields.

This is the first opportunity to see this work in Australia and has been made possible through the International Student Exchange Program between the Fachhochschule Wiesbaden and the University of Technology Sydney, which has been running since 1986. The exhibition is presented in cooperation with Goethe Institut, Sydney and is assisted by Lufthansa Star Alliance.Included are four large Polaroid format calendars, each offers different ways of exploring perception through complex photographic processes. These big calendars, produced by Visual Communication Design students, are deserving of their international reputation and the many awards they have received.

In 1998 under the name 'memo 38', Interior Design students and teachers by means of 3D Animation created a virtual reconstruction of the Jewish Synagogue in Wiesbaden The beautiful synagogue on Michelsberg was destroyed in 1938, during the pogroms of the Kristallnacht under the Nazi regime. With history in mind they set out to gather a mosaic of information, the project took twenty months to complete using elaborate computer techniques.

Virtual worlds and characters are brought to life through computer assisted tools in the sampling of work produced by the 3D Animation students of Wiesbaden. Complex and abstract concepts from underwater to outer space are realised, often with humour, using imagination and the latest technologies. [gallery media]
