Abstract

Richardson's photography explores the themes of family, social history, home and memory. The images of houses and domestic environments are from the neighbourhood in which he grew up. The work is an evocative and confronting exploration into the ways in which our life experiences inform who we are today and who we might be tomorrow.

A Fool's Paradise responds to Richardson's images of a culture of frivolous consumption and reckless abandon. Overwhelmed by the sheer volume of refuse cluttering the streets, Axel reconfigures this junk into sculptural pieces that speak of a crisis of faith. Match books printed with images of burning buildings, engraved bronze bells, reading glasses, and a harp that plays a single note are constructed from a variety found objects, images, text and manufactured components.
