Abstract
Now in its fourth year The Australian Paper Art Awards exhibit major works by established and emerging Australian artists. The exhibition celebrates Australia's finest contemporary artwork on and with paper, and will be displayed at the UTS Gallery from 26 February to 29 March, 2002.
The Australian Paper Art Awards were conceived in 1995 to support, nurture and promote the use of paper in contemporary Australian art. The exhibition showcases a range of art production using paper as a support, and magnifies some of the current issues and techniques being explored by Australian artists.
A variety of techniques are displayed, including; printmaking, drawing, painting, collage, weaving, artists' books, sculpture and computer generated art. Despite the breadth of styles and approaches an overall theme is at play, Curator Lesley Harding explains: "The approaches to paper are varied, the techniques broad, the outcomes divergent. However, there is a pervading sense of the intimate in this collection of work. Harding's aim is for the Awards to "celebrate difference, applaud diversity and bring together a sample of the possibilities".
For each biennial Awards twelve different artists are invited to participate. The intent is to have a balanced selection of artists and techniques; obtaining a mix of established and younger artists and a fair representation of scale, gender, style, region and technique.
Each artist is asked to submit four works, which best represents, their current practice and have been completed during the last two years. From the presentation Australian Paper have acquired artworks from five of the artists to the value of $20,000.[gallery media]
