Abstract

Urbanisation is one of the key elements of China's cultural map today. Young artists of the so called one-child-generation have grown up in an uncertain and unpredictable environment of globalization which their previous generation did not experience.

New Urbanism as the title of this group exhibition examines young Chinese artists' responses to the ongoing modernisation affecting the destiny of China's 1.3 billion people. Using new media, mainly photography and video, the participating artists present a wide variety of current social and cultural anxieties. Some of the issues affecting this generation include environmental degredation, the demolition of traditional cities and people being laid off work.

By redefining how urbanisation has affected their identities and lifestyles, the participating artists create a new perspective to comment and document this dramatic period of transition. [gallery media]
