Abstract
Yingarti Jilamara: The Art of the Tiwi Islands is the first major exhibition documenting one hundred years of the astonishingly rich art of the Tiwi people, the indigenous inhabitants of Melville and Bathurst Island located just beyond the sea’s horizon north of Darwin. Around 100 Tiwi works are included in a dynamic display; from early objects created for ceremony, to contemporary paintings, prints, textiles and ceramics, dating from 1910 to today.
In Tiwi language yingarti jilamara means ‘lots of art’, hinting at the breadth and scale of this exciting exhibition presented by the Art Gallery of South Australia and including art from the collections of the South Australian Museum, Flinders University Art Museum and private collections.
